Potentilla fruticosa
Shrubby Cinquefoil, Potentilla, Tundra Rose

Potentilla fruticosa is a popular ornamental plant and found in most of the Temperate Northern Hemisphere from Europe to China. It comes in a variety of colours and grows as shrub to about 1 meter tall.It fine branch structure and masses of flowers, scraggly bark make it an ideal bonsai species with interesting year around enjoyment.

Position:

Grow in full sun does not like shade. Is frost hardy.

Watering:

Water regularly and allow soil surface to dry out before watering again.

Feeding:

Feed bimonthly between March and August, use a low nitrogen high potassium fertiliser something like 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 fertiliser to help with development.

Leaf and Branch Pruning:

Give a first prune in summer cutting back adventitious shoots to the first set of leaf pairs. An autumn prune helps to shape the plant by directing energy of the pants development to selected areas.

Re-potting & Growing Medium:

Root prune on every 2-4 years when roots have filled the pot. The Potentilla is tolerant of most soil type, but it loves a humus rich well drained soil. Repot in early spring. Use 1 Part Akadama, 1 Part Damolin and 1 Leaf Mulch.

Wiring:

Shaping is primarily done with pruning and pinching, but you can wire the potentilla at most any time of the year. The best time to wire is when the trees is going dormant and the sap is returning to the roots towards the end of autumn. Leave the wire on till spring when it should be cut of.
